Clackamas, OR (June 13, 2013) – In recognition of its sustainable services to the community, Universal Recycling Technologies (URT) received the Recycler of the Year Award for best collector/processor from the Association of Oregon Recyclers (AOR) on June 7, 2013. The honor was presented during a banquet dinner at the AOR Sustainable Oregon 2013 Conference in Seaside, Oregon.
URT services all 36 counties in Oregon, effectively reaching the entire Oregon population. Since 2009, URT has processed more than 50 million pounds of electronic and universal waste at its Clackamas, Oregon facility. Additionally, URT recently launched a community-focused recycling program that provides free electronics recycling to consumers. In coordination with various local partners, the program allows URT to place recycling containers on publicly accessible lots to create a convenient, accessible solution for the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste). The program:
- prevents e-waste from being dumped in inappropriate places,
- creates an accessible solution for the proper disposal of outdated or obsolete electronics,
- offers a convenient service that is free of charge for residents, and
- provides a one-stop location where any type of electronics waste is accepted for proper, certified recycling.
The URT container program is already in progress in several states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, and Illinois. It is now being implemented in Oregon, along with an educational center or “embassy” at URT’s Clackamas facility. The "embassy" initiative includes the installation of a public information center at URT-Clackamas, free-standing recycling containers in cooperation with retail and other partners for convenient free consumer recycling at a growing number of locations, and embassy-based educational support and materials to share with local schools, libraries, and non-profits.
At URT-Clackamas, Market Area Manager Jason Kragerud serves in an ambassador role, promoting the embassy mission and helping partners secure recycling solutions. Along with promoting proper electronic and universal recycling, Jason is available to present about the benefits of recycling to local companies, non-profits, schools, libraries, and other community concerns.
