MADISON, Wis.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has managed to become very effective at keeping electronic waste out of area landfills.
New statistics from the university show more than 350 tons of computers, monitors and other electronic equipment have been recycled by the UW between July 2010 and June 2011.
The UW and its recycling partner, Universal Recycling Technologies of Janesville, have managed to earn a global recycling certification for their efforts.
"This is handled in a very environmentally and humanly responsible manner," said Edward Hoover, manager of the DoIT Tech Store. "We make sure we are not polluting resources here or in Third World countries."
In addition, the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) also began a year-round recycling program for personally owned computers. Since the recycling program started 18 months ago, an additional 7 tons of personal computers, monitors, and peripheral equipment were collected for recycling.
